The 21st Century Workforce Initiative is a 10-week, paid work experience program being offered through the Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with Lawrence and Skowhegan Adult Education Programs and the Skowhegan Career Center. Successful candidates will work 20 hours per week with a local employer at $10 per hour, after taking part in no-cost, individualized education and/or mentoring. Participants will be matched with local employers based on individual career interest assessment results.

This is a paid work experience program. You will be paid $10/hour for 20 hours per week for all 10 weeks, if you are eligible.

Informational Meeting (Mandatory) Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 10AM at Lawrence Adult Education, 4 School Street, Fairfield, or at 3PM at Skowhegan Area High School, 61 Academy Circle, Skowhegan.

Interview Day (Mandtory) Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 10AM at Lawrence Adult Education, 4 School Street, Fairfield, or at 3PM at Skowhegan Area High School, 61 Academy Circle, Skowhegan.

Intake/Assessment (Mandatory) Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 1pm at the KVCC Hinckley Campus (Room TBA)

Classroom October 1 - 19, 2018, Monday - Friday from 3:30pm to 7:30pm at KVCC Hinckley Campus – Averill Hall, Room TBA

Work Experience/On The Job Training October 22 - December 7, 2018 - Locations and Schedules to be determined.

You will be expected to:

1. Complete required paperwork and career assessments.

2. To be eligible for this program requires that you have a valid photo ID, and be a U.S. citizen, or have paperwork proving that you are in the country legally.

3. Pass a drug test and/or background check, if the employer requires it.

4. Participate fully all 10 weeks of the program, for 20 hours per week.

5. Meet with the Career Adviser at least once per week during the entire 10 weeks.

6. Complete the post survey and 6-month follow-up survey.

CDL Class B License with School and Passenger Bus Endorsement - F18

Calendar Sep 10, 2018 at 5 pm, runs for 12 weeks

Learn to drive a school bus and earn a Class B Commercial Drivers License with a school bus endorsement. (Tank and HazMat are also available.)This course uses competency-based curriculum from the Professional Truck Driving Institute of America (PTDIA) and meets the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) voluntary standards.

Successful completion of this course includes 42 hours of classroom instruction, 20 hours of range driving, and 10 hours of road driving. Range and road instruction will only feature school buses with automatic transmissions. This course prepares candidates to pass the State of Maine Class B/Bus Driver Licensing tests.

Qualifications:

(1) Students age 21 or older are eligible for a Class B License with school bus endorsement; (2) Applicants must hold a valid Maine driver’s license and have a good driving record with no OUI’s within the past 10 years. Your driving record will be checked; (3) Proof of good health. A physical exam form is required to be completed by your doctor prior to class start; (4) Vision correctable by lenses of at least 20/40. A vision screening will be provided at the first class; (5) Flexibility to schedule driving instruction on Saturdays and Sundays on the range/road.

Fall Session: Informational meeting with CareerCenter - Thursday, September 6 from 2-4pm.

Classroom Instruction:

September 10-25, 2018 – Monday through Thursday from 5-10pm (last week is only Monday and Tuesday)

Range Driving Instruction: September 15 – October 27, 2018 – Saturday from 7am-12pm*

Road Driving Instruction: October 6 – 27, 2018 – Saturday from 12:30pm-5:30pm* (if written permit test passed)

*Additional driving time available on Sundays and week nights.

Projected last day of instruction – November 3.Projected final testing – week of November 5-9.

Mon; Tue; Wed; Thu from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, 9/10/2018 to 9/25/2018 (3 weeks) with Trevor MacKenzie and Cathy Dumais at the Annex, Room C-5, $1,599 self-supporting fee
